Joan Marie Phelan Cooper,78, passed away peacefully with family by her side at their Metairie home on July 2, 2020 from Metastatic Breast Cancer. She was born on October 10, 1941 in New Orleans, the daughter of the late John Gleissner, and Marie (Centanni) Phelan, Sr. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul Ervin Cooper, their three daughters, Renee Cooper Stewart, Darlene Marie Pagani (Jason) and Marlene Marie Brindza (Marc). Grandsons Duncan Albert Stewart and Connor Albert Stewart and granddaughter Stella Rosalie Pagani, her sister Linda Morvant (Irby) and brother John Gleissner Phelan, Jr. (Jean Ann).

She was loved by many nieces and nephews: Goddaughter Melanie Hinkel (Mark), Maci Hinkel, Irby Morvant, Jr. (Allyson), Amelia, Thomas and Natalie Morvant. Godson John Edward Phelan, the late Stacey Lynn Phelan, Natalie Schliem (Todd), Jacob and Sophia Schliem and Matthew Phelan (Tisha), Grace, Julie, Maggie and Matthew Jr. Phelan. Her cousins, extended family and lifelong friends also meant so much to her.

She was a graduate of West Jefferson High School, Soule Business College and a licensed cosmetologist. She worked as a real estate agent, court reporter and an executive secretary. She retired from Freeport McMoRan and Crescent Technologies. Joan and Paul owned and operated their family businesses, Vieux Carre Beauty Salon and Cooper Pottery in the French Quarter.

Visitation will be at MOTHE FUNERAL HOME, Harvey on Friday July 10, 2020 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.Saturday July 11, 2020 there will be a visitation at HARRY McKNEELY & SON FUNERAL HOME, Ponchatoula from 12:00 – 3:00 pm followed by burial at Collins Cemetery at Lee’s Landing.
